Kukeri Chase Evil Spirits from Sofia

Kukeri and musicians from Bansko rocked Sofia downtown with authentic folklore songs and dances

Kukeri (mummers) from Bansko, Bulgaria's largest winter resort, have arrived in Sofia to chase the evil.
We will rescue Sofians from garbage collection problems and high central heating bills, promise the masked enthusiasts. The procession of dancers, singers and musicians caused quite a furor in Sofia downtown Sunday. The moment music started playing in the Alexander Nevski Square at 11ham, people thronged in crowds. Sofians competed with a group of Japanese tourists taking pictures of the unique masks and costumes.
People would get off trams to join the musical fiesta. Most applauded among the kukeri were Georgi (5) and Galina (8) who wore You Are Not Alone ribbons in support of the Bulgarian nurses in Libya.
The most important thing is not that we were in Sofia but that we managed to win the hearts of Sofians. This is our greatest reward, said the guests from Bansko who would not stop dancing and singing for hours.
